Engineering, Manufacturing & Technical Recruitment
- Market Commentary April 2010

Dear Professional,

The first quarter has seen an upswing in client enquiries from both existing and new clients operating in broadly based industries. Some of these enquiries have come to fruition whilst others have either dropped off or have been deferred. The conclusion is that there is some trepidation in hiring and the wait and see approach is still prevalent with the decisions to hire dragging out. However we believe that the job market for engineering, manufacturing and technical staff is positive compared with six to nine months ago and our optimism continues to remain high for 2010.

Following are our observations of the key recruitment markets we have been operating in since 1979.

Consulting Engineering and Building Services

The March quarter saw renewed confidence and many businesses in the consulting sector are approaching full capacity. This means that we can soon expect increased demand for experienced building services consultants.

As mentioned last year, Green credentials such as Green Star and NABERS qualifications are still highly sought-after and we have a number of vacancies in areas such as energy performance, plant efficiency and water / wastewater efficiency.

Some contractors are experiencing a quieter than normal time this quarter but attribute this to the natural lag in the industry. Six months ago the consultants were quiet and now some contractors are feeling it. However, the outlook for this sector is optimistic as the contractors can see that the consultants are picking up and they expect to follow suit.

All enquiries and updated resumes can be directed to Simon Black at
simonb@australiawide.com.au or 03 9847 6500.

Automotive Engineering

As we are all aware the automotive sector was hit hard as a result of the global economic downturn. The industry continues to face international and domestic competitive pressures. It is pleasing to report that greater market confidence has been reflected in an increased number of job orders from our automotive clients, especially at the tier 1 level. We have been working on engineering, engineering management and sales positions and have been particularly busy in the automotive O.E. aftermarket area. We have also been recruiting both permanent and contract Process, Product and Production Engineers.

Our clients continue to express interest in new graduates with approximately 5 through to 10 years experience. It is however true to say that permanent automotive recruitment has not recovered to the level of past times just yet.

We regularly receive calls from engineers with automotive experience who want to transition into non-automotive sectors such as infrastructure, rail, alternative energy, etc. Once again, just a reminder to not define yourself by the industry sector you have come from, but by the skills and competencies you will bring to your next position. Always think in terms of the competencies you have acquired over the course of your career, which are not defined by the companies you have worked for.

All enquiries and updated resumes can be directed to Mercedes Toale at
mercedest@australiawide.com.au or 03 9847 6500.

Energy & Infrastructure

The last quarter saw an improvement in recruitment within infrastructure and heavy industry. After delays in capital non-Government projects caused by the GFC, we are finally seeing more opportunities for experienced engineering and project management professionals across Australia. Salaries have not rebounded to the boom times but there are good opportunities out there.

Employer confidence is continuing to improve and statistics show that the number of job advertisements is rising. Construction, mining and water specialists have seen an increase in demand. Forward thinking employers realise that they will need to recruit before the competition for talent reduces their choices.

All enquiries and updated resumes can be directed to Nick Gilson at
nickg@australiawide.com.au or 03 9847 6500.

Drafting

The first quarter of 2010 initially showed signs of some improvement for enquiry for contract drafters - but unfortunately this has now subsided. There still appears to be a lot of 'toe dipping' by clients who make an initial enquiry but they are looking to pay rates significantly less than they paid previously. Contractors need to be realistic in their rate expectation to remain competitive.

Building services, HVAC, civil and structural drafters with proven experience still remain in demand however rates for these drafters are also still very competitive.

Whilst there is still a cautious approach to hiring we expect more contracts on both a short term or on-going basis as the year progresses.

All enquiries and updated resumes can be directed to Gary Mullane at
garym@australiawide.com.au or 03 9847 6500.

Electronics, Software & Communications Engineering

There is a slow but steady, with many bumps along the way, upturn in demand. Employers have been taking up the slack after a year of running below capacity but latest signs are that expansion may be about to bud and blossom. Technology demand for C#.Net Developers has been high but very specific in terms of experience and with strong emphasis on design process. Embedded software demand has been middling and we need to see growth in traditional embedded system users, such as automotive, for there to be a real upsurge in embedded software demand. Several small to mid-sized companies in emerging technologies are beginning to peep out from under the snow to see if the sun is shining and in some cases, it is! The old saying is that one swallow does not a summer make, but we hope that it certainly means that winter is over. Opportunities for Electronics Hardware Engineers are still few and far between, and the renewable industries are not producing the jobs that we would all like to see - yet that's where everyone wants to work! Salaries are always hard to predict, and the key feature in any company's recruitment plans is to find the right person and then try and afford his or her expectations. Recent experience has shown that for the right person the company will dig fairly deep, but they expect the person to deliver or many fronts. It could become a hectic spell soon but we are aware that a fairly large number of people are really struggling to find a position or a position that really motivates them, and which pays moderately well. Keep focused on where your key skills are, and remember the interview tip of previous commentaries - be specific, give examples and give the employer a darn good reason to hire you! Best of luck.

All enquiries and updated resumes can be directed to Roy Dickson at
royd@australiawide.com.au or 03 9847 6500.

Manufacturing Professionals

While there is every indication that the recovery in the manufacturing employment market is imminent, recruitment of staff has been very slow. The trade level has shown signs of positive growth whilst management opportunities have been few.

All the employers that we speak to have a very positive outlook for future prospects, however, they are all waiting for a lift in new orders once the heavy run down in stocks and finished goods is completed.

Barring any further global economic downturns, the Australian small Manufacturing sector should start growing in mid to late April and climb rapidly back to full employment.

All enquiries and updated resumes can be directed to Jim Hughan at
jimh@australiawide.com.au or 03 9847 6500.

RickB,

Desculpe o abuso. Se eu encontrar atualizo aqui...

Abs a todos!
